We founded Starmack & Phillips Writers’ Services in January of 2010 to accomplish three goals: to develop clients' distinctive and personal voices; to produce persuasive, professional documents that achieve clients' ambitions; and to help clients be the best writers they can be. We are proud to offer a full range of editing, consulting, and writing assistance, from carefully reviewing documents for spelling or grammatical errors to working side-by-side with college applicants or professionals transitioning to new careers.

As writers and as graduates of prestigious institutions, we understand the demand for high-quality written work and are sensitive to the pressures of academic and professional life. We share a commitment to excellence in the craft and take pride in a creative vision that aids every client in developing precise and engaging documents.

To that end, we promise to deliver on every document the four principles of our business philosophy: punctuality, professionalism, personal touch, and success. With these values serving as our compass points, Starmack and Phillips Writers’ Services is an essential tool for writers at every stage. It gives your project the conceptual core, rigorous structure, and stylistic sheen that can only be created by expert review.

Founders

A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Barnard College, Columbia University, Julia Phillips has had her essays and short stories published in such journals as Drunken Boat. She was recently nominated for the Pushcart Prize and named a finalist for the Glimmer Train Short-Story Award for New Writers. This summer, she completed her first novel. After four years as an intern, assistant, and associate in the editorial departments of Columbia University Press, The New Yorker, and Raw Books & Graphics, she co-founded Starmack & Phillips Writers’ Services in order to address the writing and editing needs of a larger community. Since its launch, she has had the pleasure of consulting on a range of projects, including an English-language website for a Russian national park. A Russian speaker, Julia is living on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula as part of a Fulbright grant in Creative Writing. She is working on a collection of short stories about the peninsula's transition from military base to tourism hotspot.

"Julia Phillips and Sophia Starmack Launch Writers’ Services" - June 15, 2010

Julia Phillips and Sophia Starmack Launch Writers’ Services

June 15, 2010 - Julia Phillips and Sophia Starmack are delighted to announce the launch of Starmack & Phillips Writers’ Services, offering a full range of writing and editing assistance. Starmack & Phillips can be reached online at www.starlipswriters.com.

Starmack & Phillips helps clients meet their professional and academic goals through the creation of high-quality written documents, including college and graduate school application essays, résumés and cover letters, project and grant proposals, and advertising copy and web content.

“We meet our clients at any point in the process,” said Starmack, “from brainstorming and organizing ideas to final spelling and grammar checks.”

Starmack & Phillips is a family-owned business whose co-founders are not only partners but also cousins. Both Phillips (B.A. Barnard College, Columbia University, ’10) and Starmack (B.A. Sarah Lawrence College, ’06; M.A. French and Francophone Literature, Bryn Mawr College, ’10) have worked as professional writers and editors for several years.

Individually, the cousins have helped their clients to publish books, develop marketing campaigns, and secure places at renowned colleges and universities in the U.S. and abroad.

“Now we’re aiming to reach a more diverse client base and take on a wider variety of projects,” explained Phillips, “so it’s the perfect time for us to combine our skills by working together.”

As graduates of prestigious colleges, Starmack and Phillips are especially sensitive to the rigors of academic life and the demand for high-quality work. They understand that the writing process can be intimidating and take pride in helping their clients write with ease, comfort and clarity.

“We’re writers ourselves,” added Starmack, “so we share a commitment to the craft and a creative vision. Our goal is for our clients to be the best writers they can be.”
